Jeans: More than Just a Trend

Over the past few years, a lot has changed with regards to the way people dress up. However, one thing seems to be the staple and that is the presence of jeans in ANY wardrobe.

Jeans are actually trousers that are made out of denim. Denim, on the other hand, is fabric that is made out of cotton twill textile. In denim, the weft goes through two or more warp threads, which creates the trademark ribbing found on the reverse side of the fabric.

Over the years, a lot of brand names have come out of the woodwork, first out came men’s denim jeans, before the creation of women’s jeans.

Back in the early days, denim jeans were worn my workers especially during the Second World War. At the time, the jeans of men had front zippers while those of women had side zippers. It was only during the 1960s that both gender’s jeans featured front zippers. Initially denim jeans were like bib overalls. Levi Strauss even dominated during the 1960s when the “waist overalls” were promoted rather than just saying these were “jeans”.

Earlier during the 1950s, James Dean made waves when he wore jeans in the movie Rebel Without a Cause, causing a stir as though wearing denim jeans was a sign of youth rebellion. As a result, people wearing denim jeans were banned from entering restaurants, theaters, and schools.

It was during the 1980s and 1990s that the wearing of denim jeans finally became a wardrobe staple wherein people of both genders and all ages were able to wear jeans. These days, jeans are even worn to various events – especially the ones that do not necessarily require a formal attire.

So jeans are really more than just your average Levi’s. Although Levi’s still is one of the best known brand of jeans, there is a rich history behind the wearing of jeans that make each moment wearing it something to be cherished.
